Birthstone of the Month
Ah, the surprising garnet is this month’s birthstone. This mineral is best known for its red color. Yet among gemologists and collectors garnet is also appreciated in a rainbow of colors.
Perhaps you have seen rust red or light pink garnets somewhere along the way? Or green garnets, including that fascinating mint green color? Fewer have seen blue or black garnet specimens or the rare color-shifting garnet that looks clear. Yes, that’s one surprising mineral!
The classic garnet is named for its red color — granatum in Latin, referring to pomagranate seeds. Garnets are a hard mineral, making it possible for Ancient Egyptians to carry garnets into battle as talismans. Victorians popularized the garnet in jewelry settings.
We’ve got a nice garnet selection online for you this month, so here’s to January 2021 and beyond.
