Horses on the Beach
Isle of Muck, Scotland
Horses on the beach of the Isle of Muck wandered where they liked, free to roam on the wee island of 39 people. It's one of the Small Isles west of Mallaig that includes Rum, seen in the distance here with clouds swirling around it. The horses belong to Lawrence MacEwan who was the Laird of Muck with I visited, a real medieval laird in the 21st century. This image from my National Geograhic Traveler story on the Inner Hebrides has become a favorite of many, representing the still-wild outposts to be found in these remote islands.
